University of Maryland Institute for Genome Sciences wins $9.9M NIH grant

The University of Maryland Institute for Genome Sciences was awarded a $9.9 million federal grant Tuesday to build a database to analyze genetic information.
The grant — given by the National Institutes of Health to Owen White, a genome scientist and researcher — will help create a library of genetic data available to U.S. researchers for free.
The award was part of $21 million in grants awarded by the NIH Tuesday for the Human Microbiome Project — a national effort to study the genes of microorganisms that impact human health.
The University of Maryland Institute for Genome Sciences was formed 18 months ago in Baltimore. The institute — headed by Dr. Claire Fraser-Liggett, a genome scientist and microbiologist and the former director and president of Rockville-based Institute of Genomic Research — is located at the University of Maryland, Baltimore BioPark.
