The Lightbulb Moment Competition

The Office of Student Affairs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine invited entries that represent the most innovative new ideas in the medical field for The Lightbulb Moment Competition. The winner(s) of The Lightbulb Moment Competition will receive recognition and compete for prizes to support the development and commercialization of an important new product, technology or concept.

The deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI) was October 31, 2016. The review committee has selected four finalists. All finalists have been invited to present their product concepts at The Lightbulb Moment Competition that will be held on February 27, 2017. The winning entry (or entries) will be selected through live voting by a panel of judges representing physicians, faculty and leading industry investors. The project(s) deemed to be the most innovative will be announced at the event. The first place winner(s) will receive a monetary prize and help to accelerate the idea towards improving the medical field. 

Examples of novel concepts:

  • A medical education tool that helps medical students with the curriculum
  • A medical device that furthers the medical field
  • Any other concept that could improve the lives of patients

Prizes

Each prize is awarded to the team, not each individual team member.

  • First Place: $500 & a 3-month coworking membership to Betamore.
    Coworking Membership Features:
    -Part-time access to space, at least M-F, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
    -Unlimited bookable conference room times
    -Access to members-only events + discounted education
    -Access to the Betamore Mentor Program + additional discounts

  • Second Place: $250
  • Third Place: $100
