Baltimore's long-struggling west side is outperforming the rest of downtown, including the waterfront, on job gains and some other measures of economic vitality. It is a sign that redevelopment efforts are gaining traction. The west side added 130 jobs between summer 2003 and summer 2004, "largely because of expansion at the University of Maryland, Baltimore." The UM BioPark is cited.
