Baltimore Business Journal: California biotech takes 13,000 square feet at UM BioPark

A publicly traded biotechnology firm from California is taking 13,000 square feet in the University of Maryland, Baltimore's BioPark.

Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) ) is a life science tools developer and manufacturer based out of San Diego. The company does work in genomic sequencing and has previously partnered in that work with the UM School of Medicine's Institute for Genome Sciences.

It will become the newest tenant in the UM BioPark's 801 W. Baltimore St. building. The building is owned by Ventas Inc., a life sciences real estate investment trust, and is part of a larger development managed by Wexford Science + Technology.

The BioPark location will be Illumina's first commercial location on the East Coast. The available lab and office space will house its new Illumina Solutions Center facility, and will be used to provide training labs and office space for hundreds of employees and customers. The company declined to disclose exactly how many Illumina employees would working out of the BioPark space.
