The State of Maryland's new $43 million state-of-the-art Forensic Medical Center opened in the BioPark in September 2010, and houses one of the largest medical examiner’s facilities in the U.S. The Maryland Chief Medical Examiner's office investigates about 10,000 deaths and performs about 4,000 autopsies a year. This facility includes a biosafety level 3 laboratory for investigations involving infectious agents.
