BioPark hosts 2nd Annual BioBLAST! Middle School Open House

BioBLAST!

On Friday May 3rd, the University of Maryland BioPark will host one hundred middle school students from neighborhood Baltimore City Public Schools for its second annual BioBLAST Middle School Open House. Starting at 10am, students from James McHenry Elementary Middle School, Southwest Baltimore Charter Middle and Booker T. Washington Middle School will have fun with science.

The BioBLAST! event seeks to encourage middle school students to prepare for careers in science and technology by linking them to scientists and giving students a chance to try science out for themselves.

First, participating students will be treated to a spectacular show by Mad Science. Next, they will participate in hands-on science experiments led by faculty, staff and students from organizations throughout the region including:
  • Baltimore BioWorks
  • Baltimore City Community College Life Sciences Institute located in the BioPark
  • Becton, Dickinson & Company (BD), a medical technology company located in Sparks, Maryland
  • Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Disease, part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine located in the BioPark
  • Center for Translational Research, a part of Catholic Health Initiatives located in Towson, Maryland

  • Institute for Genome Sciences, part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine located in the BioPark
  • Paragon Bioservices, a contract manufacturing and research organization located in the BioPark

Each participating student will leave with an application for our BioBLAST Essay Contest with prizes including a $500 scholarship to a science-themed summer camp of their choice. The essay contest is sponsored by the Cristata Cares Foundation for the second year.

To make this event possible, 0ver 50 volunteers will be joining us including other BioPark and University of Maryland employees and 20 high school students from Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy.
