Corporate Bioscience Training Firm Opens at University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore

Baltimore BioWorks intends to bring "biotechnicians" to life science firms operating across the state

Baltimore, MD, August 6, 2012 The University of Maryland BioPark announced today that Baltimore BioWorks, Inc., a vocational bioscience training firm, has signed a lease to join the BioPark and its expanding group of commercial tenants. With this agreement, Baltimore BioWorks has opened corporate offices in the BioPark’s BioInnovation Center located at 801 West Baltimore Street in Baltimore.

“Adding Baltimore BioWorks as one of our new commercial tenants is very exciting for us as workforce readiness is critical in the life sciences industry,” said Jane Shaab, University of Maryland Research Park Corporation Senior Vice President. “We are seeing increased interest in the BioPark from many types of bioscience-related companies. As a result, we have a great mix of tenants who range from emerging life science companies to training and educational resource firms to outsourced research and clinical services providers.”

Baltimore BioWorks, Inc., funded by its founders and The Abell Foundation, is a newly formed molecular biological manufacturing, distribution and pharmacokineticscompany whose mission is to become the first minority-owned, self-sustaining, vocational biotechnology training company in the world. The vision of Baltimore BioWorks is to become a profitable biotech company who hires and trains vocational employees – in essence, a paid training program. Vocational employees will receive extensive one-year training and will emerge as qualified “biotechnicians” capable of working in almost any Maryland biotech company. Baltimore BioWorks’ corporate headquarters are located in the University of Maryland BioPark. The company also has operations in Baltimore’s Holabird Business Park and plans to open a manufacturing and distribution center on Wicomico Street, in close proximity to the BioPark, later this year.

“We selected the BioPark as a location in part because of the direct access to Baltimore City Community College’s Life Sciences Institute, which is located within the Park,” said John Powers, Baltimore BioWorks, Inc. Vice President. “As a company committed to training a bioscience workforce, it is invaluable for us to have close association with BCCC and other tenants at the BioPark as well as with the nearby BioTechnical Institute of Maryland. Running our corporate offices from here will undoubtedly help Baltimore BioWorks achieve its vision.”
